Ten thousand passengers who booked on Thursday to fly with easyJet to, from and within the UK have been cancelled.

the independent has identified at least 60 ground flights today, most to and from London Gatwick – the airline’s main base.

Britain’s largest budget airline cannot man the scheduled schedule from Sussex airport, canceling around 30 flights daily with a few days’ notice.

But many passengers have received significantly fewer warnings, with travelers from Bristol to Lisbon being told at 5 a.m. that the day’s only flight is grounded. They were told, “This is due to a technical problem with your aircraft that could not be resolved.”

A flight between Edinburgh and Birmingham was canceled just three hours before departure. No reason was given.

Many of the Thursday cancellations are to distant destinations and places with few alternative services. From Gatwick, they include both major airports in Sicily, Catania and Palermo; Olbia in Sardinia; Bodrum in Turkey; and Marrakesh in Morocco.

Based on a typical aircraft capacity of 180, and the “occupancy factor” (share of seats filled) in the last comparable month of June, in 2019, the independent calculates that an average of 167 passengers are booked on each flight, which equates to more than 10,000 travelers.

All ground passengers have the right to be flown to their destination on the same day, if a flight is available, including with alternative airlines.

If a same-day replacement is not available, easyJet will provide a hotel room and meals.

In addition, compensation of £220 (or £350 for flights over 1,500km) will be payable to each passenger unless the airline can demonstrate that “extraordinary circumstances” were responsible.

A handful of flights to and from Paris Charles de Gaulle – to Gatwick, Bristol and Luton – were grounded “due to industrial action with the Paris Charles De Gaulle fire brigade tomorrow”.

Passengers booked on these flights are not entitled to compensation.

If all travelers entitled to compensation claimed compensation, the bill for today’s flights alone would be more than £2 million.

British Airways cancels an average of 120 flights on weekdays – the vast majority of them with a few weeks’ notice.
