The latest installment of Apex Legends’ Stories from the Outlands series, “Family Business,” premiered today via the game’s official YouTube channel. Centered around Lifeline, the episode depicts a young Ajay’s rebellious escape from her parents’ demanding, heavily armed lifestyle, along with the friends she made — and lost — along the way.
The episode opens with the revelation that Lifeline has a boyfriend. After a heated argument with her mother, Ajay leaves her wealthy family for good. She appears to have taken one of the drones produced by Chevrex, her parents’ company, and modified it to heal rather than hurt. With DOC in tow, Ajay abandons her old life and joins the Frontier Corps, a humanitarian aid organization.
After rescuing her friend on the battlefield, Ajay notices that some of the weapons used in battle are also made by Chevrex, confirming her decision to end her family for good. Unfortunately, her boyfriend is seriously injured and she needs even more medicine. The drug in question is manufactured by Silva Pharmaceuticals, a company run by Torres Silva, Octane’s grandfather (who has spent most of Octane’s life posing as his father). Always up for an adventure, a young Octane teams up with Lifeline to raid his family’s pharmaceutical facility, though Octane seems to have ulterior motives as he’s holding an armful of Stim syringes when the duo is busted by the Silva Pharmaceuticals security team. Thinking fast from Lifeline allows her to quickly dispatch the security team, though a swarm of Chevrex drones chase Ajay and Octavio as they leave the facility. Fortunately, Octane had the brilliant idea of bringing along a pair of wingsuits so the pair could escape to safety – but not before Octane put a bullet in the thigh.
Back at Frontier Corps hospital, Ajay and Octane return with the drug, but are interrupted when Torres Silva and Lifeline’s mother, Cherisse, arrive with armed guards and another fleet of Chevrex drones. However, it seems Octane and Lifeline planned this, as Octane begins to livestream the incident as Torres and Cherisse begin pointing guns at the Frontier Corps patients. Fearing a PR disaster, Torres and Cherisse quickly back off, and the patients applaud Ajay and Octavio.
Unfortunately, Lifeline’s boyfriend is not among them. “You will always be a Che,” he says, before ending their relationship. But luckily, Octane still has Lifeline’s back. While he jokes to comfort her, viewers finally get a good view of his face, masked off. He also has organic legs, implying that these events happened before the infamous grenade jump that gave Octane metal legs.
The episode ends with Lifeline and Octane rocking out to a song by Ajay’s band, The Flyer Liars. It’s a bittersweet moment given the current state of their relationship after the huge fight they had in Season 12, but today’s episode of Stories from the Outlands seems to suggest that there may still be hope for their friendship. But they certainly have a lot to figure out – shortly after Octane blew his legs off, he manipulated Ajay into giving him his robot shins, jeopardizing her career. Last season, he unknowingly delivered Lifeline’s beloved Frontier Corps to her mother on a silver platter, accidentally aiding his grandfather’s hostile takeover of the Syndicate, so it makes sense that Ajay wouldn’t want anything to do with him at this point. But their relationship is unlikely to be over for good, especially since they’ll have to work as a team now that Torres Silva runs the syndicate and Cherisse Che has taken over Lifeline’s Frontier Corps.
