How to prevent your Mac from going to sleep

1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences

4. To prevent your Mac from sleeping, period, select Never on both Charger and Battery tabs

How to Temporarily Disable Sleep Mode on Mac Using Terminal

If you don’t want to disable sleep mode indefinitely, you can use the Terminal command “caffeine” to disable it temporarily. Your computer will stay awake as long as you don’t close the Terminal window when you run the command.

Sleep scheduling on your Mac

Finally, macOS X also allows you to schedule your computer’s sleep cycles. Here’s how.

1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen and select System Preferences

Using different sleep settings on a Mac

In addition to disabling sleep mode in the power saver settings menu, there are a few other settings that can affect sleep mode that you should be aware of.

“Sleep hard drives if possible”

If you have a hard drive on your Mac, checking it will turn off your hard drive as soon as possible to save power. This also means that if your Mac has been idle, it may take a minute to get up and running again once the drive starts spinning.

“Turn on Power Nap while the battery is working”

If you don’t want to keep the computer completely “awake”, this setting allows the computer to wake up periodically and perform tasks such as checking email and checking for software updates. A convenient compromise.

“Wake for WiFi network access”

With this setting, the computer wakes up when someone wants to access file sharing, such as if you have a shared iTunes library in your household.
