Looks like Overwatch is going to be free to play

There is a big Overwatch 2 reveal for this week with the promise of important news, including details about the next PVP beta. There are rumors going around about what’s in store, and there’s talk of one actually catching fire overwatch adopt a free-to-play model. If so, it would be much too late.

In the past week or so, a Twitter user with the handle @insider_wtf has posted leaks that have proven to be completely accurate. They had the full list of reveals for Sony’s State of Play, the release date for the remake of The Last of Us Part I (before Sony itself leaked the news) and a hint about Hideo Kojima’s next game, Overdose† In other words, the leaker appears legit.

(They also suggested that Hollow Knight: Silksong coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one. We may learn more about that at today’s Xbox and Bethesda showcase.)

On Saturday, they posted a somewhat cryptic tweet that was cryptic on the face of it. It ended with “We are free to play”, but the rest of the text was from the overwatch theatrical teaser in 2015.

Tom Henderson, a journalist with a wealth of accurate reporting on upcoming games, responded to the tweet with a Hammond emoji. So yeah, free-to-play is probably underway.

We’ll probably find out more details later this week, but I expect this is only the PVP side of Overwatch 2 that will be free to play, meaning the current game will also be F2P. I imagine the highly anticipated PVE will be a separate purchase, making what some would suggest is one of the most intricate DLC pieces in the industry.

In any case, the move to free-to-play should have happened a long time ago. I’ve been advocating that for years overwatch have to make the switch. It could have helped bring in new players during the arid last few years and boost the hype for it overwatch 2. I’m glad it finally seems to be happening.

And who knows? With the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard deal still in the works, perhaps the announcement could come once the Xbox and Bethesda are in the spotlight.

Meanwhile, the Overwatch 2 Reveal Event (as it’s officially called) takes place on Thursday at 1:00 PM ET. You can check out the overwatch YouTube and Twitch channels. Team 4 says it “has been eagerly awaiting the moment when we can show you all the stuff we’ve made” and hinted at introducing more heroes.

The team closed the blog post with another teaser: “Some may say it’s time for a reckoning.” hmm. I wonder what that could mean…
