Pokemon Sword and Shield Art Director’s New Studio Announces The Plucky Squire

The news broke Thursday morning that Pokemon Sword and shield art director James Turner had left Game Freak to open a new studio, All Possible Futures, with Ditto’s Swords director Bidden. The news came as a shock to many who associated Turner with the design of new Pokemon dating back to several pasts pokemon generations. A bigger surprise was to follow, however, as the first game from Turner and All Possible Futures, The brave squire, was announced at the Devolver Direct 2022 presentation since then.

At first sight, The brave squire seems to have taken a lot of inspiration from Ditto’s Swords† The Devolver Direct announcement trailer opens with a 2D sequence where players travel through a storybook as the pages turn. The brave squire however, expectations quickly change as main character Jot the squire ends the book and jumps off the page. It seems that The brave squire will combine both 2D adventures with 3D.

to describe The brave squireHowever, its gameplay as a simple adventure does it a disservice. It’s clear that the All Possible Futures team plans to fill The brave squire with a hugely diverse range of gameplay experiences. In 2D alone, Jot is shown performing both isometric and side-scrolling combat, completing adventure puzzles with collected items, fighting a bear with mechanics of Result!!critters shoot with SHMUP action on the side of a mug, and more.

The 3D gameplay of The brave squire don’t get the same amount of time to demonstrate the diverse array of ideas the 2D side of the game does, but they’re there. there’s something Pikminstyle ally collecting, melee combat and unique traversal elements. The bedroom where the game takes place seems like an overworld of sorts, which Jot will explore with various tools that they “plucked” from different 2D spaces. But the full scope of The brave squire has yet to be fully revealed.

Obviously, gamers have only glimpsed what All Possible Futures plans to deliver The Brave Spire† What the project trailer has promised is ambitious to say the least. Turner, Bidds and the All Possible Futures team appear to be filling up The Brave Spire with their love of video games, be they 2D or 3D.

Early Thursday it was believed James Turner was still with Game Freak, hard at work on the art direction for the pokemon franchisee. likewise, Ditto’s Swords seemed ripe for a sequel to One Bit Beyond. Instead, there’s a new studio in All Possible Futures, and the first project, The brave squire, looks unique and exciting. Expect to see more The brave squire in the next months.

The brave squire will be released in 2023 on PC, PS5, Switch and Xbox One.
