Even more story is coming to Resident Evil Village this year, just in time for Halloween. A slate from downloadable content developer Capcom mentions Winters’ Expansion brings with it a new chapter called “Shadow of Rose”, which continues the story of village protagonist Ethan’s daughter as she struggles with her gross, fungus-based superpowers.
Capcom revealed the DLC chapter during the June game showcase, while also giving a ton of detail about what the new story will cover. Shadow of Rose continues after the ending scene that players saw in the Village base game, which jumps 16 years ahead in time to show us a now grown-up Rose. The ending of Village suggested that Rose had abilities resulting from her parents’ exposure to the mutagenic moss in the center of Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil VII, and that’s why characters like Chris Redfield keep a close eye on her.
Rose’s story looks like it will take on a more psychological tone than the original Village story. According to the Capcom Showcase, Rose has fused with consciousness within the megamycete, the massive fungus colony beneath the base game in the base game that helped spawn the village’s monsters. We learned in Village that in people infected by the fungus, their consciousness can merge with it even after they die, so who knows what she’ll find there. In the trailer, Rose meets another girl who looks exactly like her, and is guided through the story by an apparent spectral force calling herself Michael. As Capcom pointed out, it’s not just monsters that threaten you in Shadows of Rose – the whole world is trying to kill you, and because it exists in Rose’s consciousness rather than physical reality, it seems like the locations can rotate and change you. while you play.
