Top 10 Pokémon with the Scariest Designs, Ranked

pokemon introduced us to over 900 different types of creatures with unique personalities and abilities. Despite most of them being cute, loved and adored by many, some of them are downright scary. Some Pokémon designs may have scared trainers (myself included) in the past, showing that maybe they don’t all have to look cute and innocent. Perhaps this is the Pokémon way to instill fear in enemies and predators.

But out of all the different Pokémon out there, only a handful can be considered scary. So of the 900+ Pokémon, here’s the top 10 with the scariest designs, ranked.

10. Sablee

Sablee’s design is scary when you are in dark places. This Pokemon has dark purple skin and sharp teeth and has gems for the eyes. They are known for being mischievous in caves and the gem on their chest grows as it mega evolves. But despite his scary and mischievous behavior, all he wants is a friend.

9. Mimikyu

Mimikyu has to be the scariest Pika clone in the Pokémon franchise. His entire body is hidden in a patch meant to resemble Pikachu so that trainers can love it. Remove the rag and you will be told you will not live another day to regret it. While it’s cute, it’s still creepy because of its ragdoll-esque look. And if you think that’s not scary enough, the Z-move in Pokémon Sun and Moon is even scarier. It wraps the opponent under the rag-like disguise and attacks them from within. Not to mention, the name of the Z-move is “let’s cuddle forever”… *shivers*.

8. Wishiwashi

You may think that this water-type Pokémon is cute and adorable, but don’t be fooled by looks. This Pokémon transforms into its “school form” and turns it into a monstrous giant fish. It’s designed to look like a bunch of fish turned into one, giving the term “safety in numbers” a whole new meaning. It is also said that when this Pokémon is in its school form, it can surpass the strength of the strongest aquatic creatures, including Gyarados.

7. Ditto

There is a rumor in the Pokémon games that Ditto was failed Mew experiments. But that’s not what makes this Pokémon scary by design. It’s a cute, genderless blob that can transform into any Pokémon it sees (and human into .) Detective Pikachu† But that’s not all: in most Ditto transformations, the copy keeps its original eyes, making Coraline feeling. Imagine seeing a cute, cuddly Pokémon, only to have its beady eyes stare into your soul.

6. Gigantamax Garbodor

Imagine this. You fight it out with another trainer. They bring out their last Pokémon, Garbodor, a six-foot-tall garbage Pokémon. Suddenly this big pile of garbage gets even bigger, 10 times its size. It’s technically the size of a living garbage dump. Not only is this dynamaxed form 10x stinky and big, but it turns out that he has ingested ships, cars and buildings into his body. This big and scary Pokémon reminds us of what happens if we don’t dispose of our waste properly.

5. Galarian Slowking

You know those horror stories about parasites taking over and controlling the host body to do its job? That’s Galarian Slow King. Unlike the first version of Slowking where he and Shelder just coexist, in this version Shelder can take control of the Galarian Slowpoke. His intelligence skyrockets and apparently in the anime, Shelder can possess other trainers. Talk about a parasitic relationship.

4. Parasect

Speaking of parasitic relationships, Parasect is similar in that it has a parasitic mushroom on its head. According to the Pokédex entry, Parasect’s mushroom took over the host’s body and when removed, the body stops moving. The design is similar to real fungi, in that mushrooms tend to take over the host’s body — usually insects, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. You know how scary these Pokémon looked by constantly encountering them in the wild when you played Pokemon Legends: Arceus

3. Ariados

This Pokémon is not good for people with arachnophobia. Whether you play the main games or this pop-up creature in the spin-off titles like pokemon ranger, just seeing this big spider Pokemon is enough to make your console drop in terror. Also, this Pokémon is three feet tall. Most real spiders go for 30 centimeters, max. Not fun Pokémon for those who don’t like spiders.

2. Regidrago

Unlike all Regi designs, Regidrago has to be the most terrifying. This little Pokémon is said to have the power of all dragon-type Pokémon combined. Not only that, people feared the destruction Regidrago would wreak if it were able to fully mold its entire body, hence the reason it was sealed.

1. Galarian Corsola/Cursola

Galarian Corsola and its evolutionary form, Cursola, must be the saddest and scariest Pokémon ever created. Unlike the normal Corsola, this one seems to be dying as the color has faded away. Not to mention that when it evolves into Cursola, the body looks like a ghost hovering over its destroyed body. Very morbid and a kind reminder of global warming.

Just because one person finds this Pokémon scary doesn’t mean someone else can’t love it. Some of these Pokémon are fan favorites of other Trainers for reasons other than their looks. But either way, these Pokémon are scary and it’s up to the trainer to look beyond their looks and see them for their potential.
